Are You Happy Because of Fitness?

Let's suppose for a second that this isn’t just a blog article. It's actually a conversation that your are viewing.

I'm not a professional writer. You're not reading. This is real life.

This is the conversation, which probably hurts more than any other conversation about fitness. Why? Because it's an indication of what many think but fail to say.

This transcript is taken directly from the client. But it could have come either from me, you, or anyone.

These emails are the ones that hurt the most. They expose an unambiguous truth in the worlds body transformation. It's not as important as biceps or abdominals, but it's equally relevant.

The Internal Struggle of Fitness

While I don’t know how I should say it, I’m more content where I am.

I'm trying to figure out how I can accept my body for what it is, and how I can change my thoughts towards a more positive outlook. You could say something like, "How do I fake my way to success?"

I've been focusing more on the process, and I find it helps. But there is that voice in the back that still obsesses about my body fat goals. I start to feel less self-love when I see that my goal is not being met despite my efforts. Dare to say, perhaps I even love my self a little less. Though I know it's wrong and realize it, the thoughts still remain in my head. While this has not caused any worries, it isn't causing me to be the same. Do you have thoughts?

The Healthier Health Mindset

You feel the frustration? It's normal. Unfortunately it is all too common. It is not necessary to feel ashamed of it. Recognizing and accepting it means you can do something about it. It's worth seeking help if it's affecting how you feel or how your overall happiness is affected. The mind requires as much care as any other illness.

Where you want to start is with your question on "self love." It can be hard for men to acknowledge that. However, we all need a sense of self-worth and satisfaction about our lives.

It's vital to distinguish between your physical appearance, and your happiness. This is often one of your most difficult tasks in fitness. The more work you put into it, the more it means. This is dangerous because your self-worth can become dependent upon what you see in the mirror. (Most people are more self-critical of their appearance than someone else's.

Between body dysmorphia images and shirtless models, there is the mental purgatory in most people's view of their fitness and appearance. Negative, but better than they think. Hurful, but not detrimental, frustrating, and sometimes even overwhelming.

It doesn't always have to be this simple. Far from it. Fitness should make you feel great, boost your energy, enhance your life, and be a benefit to your health. That is not to say models and shirtless selfies can cause all the problems you are facing.

They could be. Maybe. However, it is part society and good for those who work hard + eat well.

Focusing on others only makes you more focused on things you can't change. Instead, concentrate on what you can direct change.

Your life is a mix of many different factors. It is not easy to decide what parts make up "you".

But "you," should always be a collection. It should not depend on just one or two factors. It's a lovely collage of people, work and hobbies, charity, community and any other factors that provide purpose and value.

The Fitness Portfolio

View your life like a great stock portfolio.

Ideally, you wouldn't want all your income to come only from one source. Because, despite our best efforts, things can go wrong.

You can always find other avenues or resources so you don't feel left out.

Your life is the exact same. You don’t want to be tied down to your body fat.

Perhaps you're "bulking" or focusing on more muscularity. Maybe you get sick, travel, or have more important priorities which push workouts off. Or perhaps you get older making it harder to stay lean.

Your progress may be measured in other ways. The number of activities you can engage in, the quality of your life, as well as the level and confidence you project. It is possible for any body to transform. But how that happens and what it looks and feels like are up to each individual.

This can make it difficult to have a solid expectation of what success is like.

Fitness is an ongoing journey. It's an enjoyable journey that should be enjoyed. You can tackle tough workouts, understand your body, and be more comfortable with your diet while still making great health improvements.
